Children's Palace
Overview
Located on West Yanan Road in central Shanghai, the Children’s Palace was founded in 1953 by Song Qingling (Madam Sun Yatsen). It is a training school, providing after school education to gifted kids. Here, children can take part in a wide range of extracurricular activities including music, dance, art, model making, science, technology and computer science. The palace also hosts many art performances and science and technology contests which attracts thousands of youngsters.
The main body of the Children’s Palace was a private villa of an English merchant in old Shanghai. It was started to build in 1918 and was completed in 1924. Most of its construction materials are qualified marbles carried from Europe, so it is also called the Marble Mansion. The building features marble lined hallways, wide curving staircases and a large front hall complete with ornate fireplaces, grand chandeliers and French windows. In front of the Marble Mansion is a large piece of grassland with evergreen trees all around.
There are various activities designed for young children here, divided into fixed and unfixed study projects, including swimming, drawing, dancing, gymnastics, and so forth. You can often see parents bring their children to take part in different activities, showing soft and sweet intimate relations.
The grand European type appearance of the Children’s Palace is still preserved intact till now. This construction had witnessed the renewal and changes to Shanghai and is worth your visiting.
