The End of the Earth

Overview

Introduction

Tian Ya Hai Jiao -the End of the Earth - is located near Phoenix Airport in Sanya, around 15 minutes drive from the airport. It is one of the most popular places for domestic tourists for its cultural bearing. On one of the huge stones on the beach, two Chinese words are written:" Tian Ya" (means the edge of the sky) written by Chengzhe, chief magistrate of Yazhou City during the reign of Yongzheng in Qing Dynasty. On the other huge stone behind it, there is inscribed two other Chinese words "Hai Jiao" (means the utmost end of the sea).

In Chinese "Tian Ya Hai Jiao" literally means "the End of the Earth". Nevertheless, the Chinese people have placed more emphasis on the cultural significance of the word. Lyrics of a popular love song also say: "Let’s accompany each other until the end of time, until the end of the Earth."

Tian Ya-Hai Jiao has gone far beyond a reference to geographical distance; it has become a symbol of friendship, love and life.
