Aberdeen Bay
Overview
Location
Aberdeen Bay is in the south tip of Hong Kong Island. There is also a lovely Country Park here on the Aberdeen Reservoir Road.
History
Aberdeen Bay maintains the characteristic of a traditional fishing village of the 1800s. It was once famous for the Chinese junks and the floating restaurants and the house boats where the fishermen lived. But since a fire catastrophe the "floating" restaurants do not float any more but rest on concrete pillars in the area, they still serve good dim sum, a category of Chinese snack food that includes all kinds of dumplings and won tons as well as fried spring rolls or fried chicken claws. Though, many of people today have moved on and up into high rises, and there are less boats in the harbor than previously, it is still a picturesque and photographic place worth visit.
Attraction
Fishing boats ranging from the traditional Chinese sailing boats to the luxuriously furnished modern ships fill the bay. Visitors can catch a glimpse of the boat dwellers who live in Aberdeen bay, and see their sampans scuttling to and fro. To enjoy this lively and bustling scene, take a 30 minute boat trip through the harbor or for a negotiated fee, a sampan operator (mostly elderly ladies) will take you speedily through the harbor. The famous Jumbo Floating Restaurant and the Tai Bak (Tai Bei) Seafood Boat are located at Aberdeen Harbour. Visitors can enjoy free travel by ferry boat to the restaurants to sample the delicious seafood available.
