Location
Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, situated on the southern slope of Yuexiu Hill, No. 259, Dongfeng Zhong Rd,was built to commemorate Dr. Sun Yat-Sen who established a brand new era for Chinese.
History
Sun Zhongshan (Sun Yat-sen) is the great leader in the Chinese revolution for democracy. The memorial was financed by donations by the people from Guangzhou and the overseas Chinese and is listed as one of the first class cultural relics in Guangdong Province. Designed by the famous Chinese architect, Mr. Lu Yanzhi, the construction started in 1929 and was finished in October of 1931.
Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall suffered badly damaged due to the lack of attention before the liberation, but after liberation, our government appropriated funds on several occasions to repair the memorial hall. In 1998 a completely new memorial hall was built. The memorial hall and the courtyard together cover an area of 62,000 square meters.
Attraction
In the front of the memorial hall is a statue of Sun Zhongshan. A golden slab with four Chinese characters of "Tian Xia Wei Gong" written by Sun Yat-Sen hangs above the front door of the memorial hall. The statue and the slab combine to remind people of the brilliant life experience of the great man.
The four double eaves on the front, back, left, and right sides surround the main octagonal pavilion. The whole construction is majestic, solemn and rich in Chinese national culture. Around the memorial hall, blue glazed tiles shining in the sun decorate yellow walls and red pillars. The rear of the Zhongshan Monument is erected on the top of Yuexiu Mountain. The monument is so remarkable and stately that it seems to go clean through the sky. The auditorium inside the memorial hall has a domed embedded sprung roof made of glass that has no supporting pillars to impair the view but rarely produces echoes and is an outstanding construction among world famous architecture.
