Chinese History

Chinese civilization originated in various city-states along the Yellow River valley in the Neolithic era. Turtle shells with ancient Chinese writing from the Shang Dynasty have been carbon dated to as early as 1500 BCE. The origins of Chinese culture, literature and philosophy, developed during the Zhou Dynasty (1045BCE to 256 BCE) that followed the Shang. China has had the longest lasting dynasty and spans the period in which the written script evolved from ancient oracle script to the beginnings of modern Chinese writing. The feudal Zhou Dynasty eventually broke apart into individual city states, creating the Warring States period. In 221 BCE, Qin Shi Huang united the various warring kingdoms and created the first Chinese empire. Successive dynasties in Chinese history developed bureaucratic systems that enabled the Emperor of China to directly control the vast territories.

Chinese Politics

New China is a country of many political parties. Apart from the CPC (Communist Party of China), which is in power, China has eight non-Communist parties. Since their founding, the latter have established cooperative relations with the CPC to different extents. The non-Communist parties responded to the call put forward by the CPC to hold the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), and participated in the First Plenary Session of the CPPCC in September 1949 with the CPC and other democratic personages, at which the Common Program was adopted as the provisional constitution, and the Central People’s Government was elected and founded, hence the founding of the People’s Republic of China.

Ancient Chinese civilization has close relation with feudalism. Feudalism, the ancient political system in China, is commonly a pejorative term meaning old and unscientific. But it has profound influence on China since its establishment, its collapse signifies end of a system that guided China for thousands of years.
